Since the improvement of hearing aids, lipreading has not been given the attention it deserves in research and in the clinic, say the authors. They describe lipreading and theoretically motivated approaches to its training, as well as examples of successful training paradigms and extensions to auditory-only (AO) and audiovisual (AV) speech recognition.
