Association between hearing loss and development of dementia using formal behavioural audiometric testing within the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA): a prospective population-based study

Self-reported hearing difficulties were associated with development of dementia, whereas audiograms and WRS indicating hearing loss were predictive of poorer performance on cognitive testing over time but not the development of dementia. The researchers say this supports previous work implicating central processing as contributing to both the perceived hearing difficulty and dementia.

A fluorescent photoimmunoconjugate for imaging of cholesteatoma

When applied to the middle ear, a type of photosensitizer immune conjugate (PIC) called Cet-BPD has been shown to have selective localization to squamous cell tissue associated with cholesteatoma, without localizing to other tissues such as middle ear mucosa. The researchers show PICs may be a safe visualization method with promise for intraoperative localization and treatment of cholesteatoma.
