Amyn Amlani, PhD, and Victor Bray, PhD, have published an article in 'Audiology Practices' that shows how the AuD may be responsible for worryingly low rates of workforce growth in audiology. If trends prevail, they believe the number of hearing aid specialists (HAS) will surpass audiologists between 2030 and 2035. Hearing loss and cognitive function in early old age: comparing subjective and objective hearing measures | PDF

The researchers found that, among 70-year-old Swedish participants, objectively assessed hearing loss (i.e., via pure-tone and speech-in-noise testing) was independently associated with cognitive function, while self-reported hearing loss may be too insensitive a measure to study the relationship. Hearing aid users had better global cognitive function than non-users with equivalent hearing ability.
