The researchers show that presbycusis and subsequent levels of neurochemicals [auditory gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate (Glu)] were associated with reduced speech perception or cognitive impairment. The study suggests that modulation of GABA neurotransmission could lead to new treatment strategies for cognitive impairment in presbycusis patients.
