New Research Highlights Connection Between Hearing Loss Interventions and Cognitive Decline

“The main takeaway from this [JAMA study about the impact of hearing aids and CIs on dementia] is that number one, hearing has a direct impact on cognitive health. And number two, managing hearing loss appropriately has the ability to impact more successful outcomes in terms of cognitive health,” says Sarah Sydlowski, AuD, PhD, MBA, of the Cleveland Clinic.

Cognitive training may reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in older adults. Johns Hopkins and UCSF researchers conducted a scoping review of the literature on this subject and found more than half the trials (58%) systematically excluded participants with hearing/vision impairment, and only 16% reported hearing/vision measurement. This raises concerns about if these trial findings apply to those with hearing/vision impairment and can be generalized to the broader population of older adults.
