Gene therapy rescues hearing for the first time in aged mouse models

Researchers have observed robust hearing rescue in aged mice upon injecting them with an adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors carrying a healthy gene to replace a defective gene known to cause progressive hearing loss. “This was also the first study that has rescued hearing in aging mice, which points to the feasibility of treating [patients] even at an advanced age,” says researcher Zheng Yi Chen. “The study also establishes the feasibility of other gene therapies in the aged population.”
