Peripheral hearing loss at age 70 predicts brain atrophy and associated cognitive change

Research from University College London suggests that hearing loss may influence dementia risk via pathways differently from those typically implicated in Alzheimer’s and cerebrovascular disease in cognitively unimpaired older adults. Compared to those with better hearing, individuals with hearing loss had faster rates of whole-brain atrophy, and worse hearing was correlated with more rapid hippocampal atrophy rates.
