Demographic and Audiological Characteristics of Candidates for Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids in the United States

Larry Humes, PhD, uses NHANES data to show the likely demographics of OTC hearing aid users. There are some 49.5 million adults—about 22% of US adults over age 20—with mild-to-moderate hearing loss who may be candidates for OTC hearing aids. About 40-45% of OTC hearing aid candidates are 50-69 years old, more than 70% don't use amplification, and half haven't had their hearing tested in the past 5 years.

Apple Hearing Study shares preliminary insights on tinnitus

The Apple Hearing Study, one of the largest surveys to date, indicates about 15% of all participants experience tinnitus constantly, with 36% of people ages 55+ experiencing constant tinnitus. While the majority report their tinnitus as faint, 34% say it's noticeable, and 9% report it's very loud or ultra loud.
