Hearing Loss, Hearing Aids, and Cognition

In a large-scale study of middle-aged adults, French researchers found an association between the severity of hearing loss and global cognitive impairment. Although this study has several limitations, the use of hearing aids was not associated with significantly lower odds of cognitive impairment, except for those with depression.

Hearing Aid Use Trends Among Older Adults by Income and Metropolitan vs Nonmetropolitan Residence

The proportion of older adults reporting hearing aid use increased from 11.2% to 16.3% from 2012-2022, a 45.5% increase in uptake. Hearing aid uptake was higher in nonmetropolitan vs metropolitan areas, but there was greater usage growth in metropolitan areas and among those with higher income. Hearing aid use increased across all groups except for low-income adults in nonmetropolitan areas, for whom there was a 15.2% decrease.
