Application of intentional facial nerve stimulation (FNS) during cochlear implantation as a tool to estimate the electrode position

This study demonstrates the potential of using FNS for real-time monitoring of the insertion status of the electrode during and after cochlear implantation. The system could potentially provide a radiation-free tool for positioning the electrode quite precisely for the first six implanted contacts in the basal turn. It could also hypothetically detect incomplete insertion or electrode tip fold-over.
