Global Prevalence and Incidence of Tinnitus Estimated in JAMA Systematic Review

Approximately 14% of adults experience tinnitus with 2% experiencing a severe form of it. This suggests that the global burden of tinnitus is large–similar to migraine and pain–with 740 million adults globally, and perceived to be a major problem by more than 120 million people, mostly aged 65 years or older.

Discovery advances the potential of gene therapy to restore hearing loss

Normally, the cochlea's stereocilia are long hair-like structures that transduce sound into electrical signals that can be perceived by the brain. In the absence of the genetic component protein EPS8, the stereocilia are too short to function, leading to deafness. In new research, a British team show that delivery of normal EPS8 can rescue stereocilia elongation and the function of auditory hair cells in the ears of mice affected by the loss of EPS8.

Eargo Sales Plummet in Second Quarter 2022

Eargo had a rough second quarter with 4,455 hearing aid systems shipped versus 12,548 (-64%) and net revenues falling to $7.2MM from $22.9MM (-68%) compared to Q2 2021. The company characterizes the quarter as "transitory" as it comes out of its settlement in "the DOJ investigation, cured our SEC filing delinquency and secured up to $125 million in capital from an experienced healthcare investor that will enable us to pursue our omni-channel growth strategy."
