FDA Finalizes Historic Rule Enabling Access to Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids for Millions of Americans

The final rule has been changed in several places from the proposed rule, including lowering the maximum sound output and revising the insertion depth limit of OTC hearing aids. It also requires a user-adjustable VC, performance specs and design requirements, and simplifies phrasing in device labeling. The new rule amends existing rules that apply to prescription hearing aids, repealing the conditions for sale for hearing aids, and includes provisions pertaining to state regulation of hearing aids.
