The OTC Hearing Aid Rule appeared today in the 'Federal Register', the US government's daily publication containing its documents and new/amended Federal regulations. The OTC law takes effect 60 days after publication (October 17).

The FDA's new rules for OTC hearing aids are designed to make amplification devices safe, affordable, and convenient to purchase over the counter and online.

A total of 144 articles were included, with 85,851 initial cochlear implantations and 4276 cochlear reimplantations. The pooled rate of cochlear reimplantation was 4.7% in 1989 to 2021; 6.8% before 2000, and 3.2% after 2000. Device failures accounted for the largest proportion of reimplantation (67.6%), followed by medical reasons (28.9%).
