Associations of audiometric hearing and speech-in-noise performance with cognitive decline among older adults: The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA)

Could a speech-in-noise (SIN) test become a biomarker for cognitive decline, and better hearing become an objective for delaying cognitive decline? New research from Johns Hopkins and Brown University suggests just that. From 2012-2019, they found that the 379 study participants (ages 60+) with audiometric hearing loss (vs. 323 with normal hearing) showed similar baseline cognitive performance but faster decline in global cognitive function, language, executive function, and attention—and participants with below-average QuickSIN scores showed worse baseline performance and faster decline in all these measures.
