Plasticity After Hearing Rehabilitation in the Aging Brain

Subjects over 70 years of age do not show the same absolute benefit nor the same learning curve after 2 years of cochlear implantation as younger subjects. The study results suggest three different profiles of plasticity may explain these disparities: 1) the Awakening profile, where there is a reversal of the central changes induced by deafness; 2) the Stabilization/Counteracting profile, where CIs stabilize against processes of speech/cognitive abilities, and 3) the Decline profile where independently evolving central processes are present that my make aural rehab less apparent.
